Description
Early Victorian silver and frosted glass butter dish, stand and cover. This circular piece stands on a three footed base with foliate design cast feet and a pierced pattern to the sides and a "fleur de lys" border. The domed shape cover has a bead border and pierced cross ribbon pattern, with a magnificent crown knop. The interior liner has the original frosted, star-based pattern. This is a truly exquisite piece of fine craftsmanship and a heavy gauge of silver. We do not usually bother with weights of silver in our descriptions, as we do not regard ourselves as being in the "waste metal" business. However, the weight is indicated below, just to illustrate the high quality of this piece. Probably the best butter dish we have seen in years, the best there is on the market.
Birmingham. 1854. William Gough.
