Description

This great quality silver table box, of rectangular form with canted corners, is not only a good piece of silver, but has a fascinating history. It was presented to Sir Alfred Newton by The Honourable Irish Society of which he was Governor from 1906 to 1921. Sir Alfred was Lord Mayor of London 1899 to 1900, and also Chairman of Harrods the London department store. He died in 1921 in "mysterious circumstances." Please see the many and various articles on the internet. I leave you to draw your own conclusions!
